REAL ID vs Standard Driver License

The Federal Government set standards that establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards that will go into effect starting May 3, 2023. A REAL ID is marked by a gold star in the upper-right hand corner.

Standard Driver License

A Standard Driver License still provides identity security and fraud deterrence but will not be federally compliant starting May 2023. It will not have a gold star marked in the upper-right hand corner. If you plan to fly domestically, a REAL ID is recommended.

How long is my Real ID Valid?

Real ID has a 4 year credential option and a 8 year credential option. The 8 year credential option will cost twice as much as the 4 year credential for first time applications and renewals.

What does it cost to obtain a Real ID driver license?

The fees are as follows for the 4 year credential option:

-       First Real ID: $42.50

-       Renewal: $38.50

-       Replace: $25

 

The fees are as follows for the 8 year credential option:

-       First Real ID: $81

-       Renewal: $77

-       Replace: $25

What if I do not have all the necessary documents?

You can visit your local Social Security office to obtain a Social Security card.


You can request a new birth certificate by visiting the Oklahoma State Department of Health or by downloading the myOklahoma mobile phone application.

Why do I have to present my identity documents again to apply for REAL ID after my driver's license application?

A REAL ID is a new form of identification that has its own documentation requirements. Even if you previously submitted your proof of identity documents to DPS for a driver’s license or identification card, you must do so again in order to meet federal REAL ID application requirements. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Which documents do I need to present to apply for a REAL ID?

  • ONE proof of identity that shows your date of birth and true full name, such as a valid U.S. passport, certified copy of U.S. birth certificate, valid Permanent Resident Card, etc.
  • Conditional If the true full name shown on your document does not match your current true full name, you must bring additional name change documentation for each name change.
  • TWO proof of Oklahoma residency that include the first and last name and mailing address that will be shown on your REAL ID driver's license or identification card. Ex. Mortgage bill, home utility, cell phone bill, vehicle registration card, bank statement
  • Provide Social Security number 

Can I get a REAL ID by renewing my current driver’s license or identification card by mail or online?

No. You must visit a DPS office or TAG agency in person to apply for a REAL ID for the first time. You will need to show documentation proving your identity and Oklahoma residency.  Visit ServiceOK Real ID Checklist to understand the documents you must bring to your visit.

Do I have to get a REAL ID?

A REAL ID driver’s license or identification card is optional. However, Starting May3, 2023, all states will be issuing Real ID compliant licenses. We recommend Real ID above Standard ID.

A REAL ID is needed if:

   1. Use to board domestic flights after the new May 3rd, 2023 deadline

    2. Enter military bases and secure federal facilities.

If you want to continue to use a U.S. passport, U.S. passport card, military ID, enhanced driver’s license, or other federally accepted identification for the above purposes, you do not need to get a REAL ID, however, it is recommended.

You will need to complete another application process if you wish to receive a REAL ID after getting a standardDriver License.
